Jury Duty & Respect For Working Homeschool Moms

Ok,

Here we are at the end of another week.

Has Anyone flopped in their homeschooling efforts this week? (I sure did!)

My Homeschool Flop For This Week:

I was blessed with a bit a humility this week as I spent the week on jury duty at the courthouse. The Hub works nights so the kids had an adult in the house, but it was up to them to keep to a schedule.

At first I thought, “How hard can this be? I read the blog posts of working homeschool moms and get their issues but really, I worked in the great big corporate world for years before kids. It will be a cinch to handle this!”

Boy, how wrong I was!

My usually-well organized and self-directed teens just fell apart. Completely.

My expectations for them over the course of the week dropped from:

“You can do a normal school week, just without me around to guide you”

to

“Please just figure out how to shower every day and find something to eat! Anything else is gravy!”

What a flop!

The Fail?

Well that honestly was me. I did not prepare my kids well enough for working without me around. I thought that since they work independently so well already, it would not be any different if I wasn’t in the house. Man, was I ever wrong about that.

This week I gained a huge respect for moms like A Working Mom’s Homeschool Life who work every day and still homeschool their children. People say that homeschooling is the hardest job you will have, but if you homeschool and work full time outside the home you truly have the hardest job.

The Funny?

I got a text from my daughter around about mid-week saying, “Changing the chicken’s water makes me want to throw up so I woke brother this morning to make him do it and in exchange I am making him lunch. See you when you get home.”

That was my week.

Now What about You?

How about a downright fail or a funny?

  1. oh dear! Yes, I have gained such respect for working homeschool moms since I started working part time. I was not prepared for how unprepared my teen daughter would be to just work on her own. Goodness, that’s what she does when I AM home, why couldn’t she do the same when I wasn’t??? LOL I shared a funny from my week, in which I was labeled as “funny” and I’m not sure if it’s a good thing

    1. I am glad that it is not just me and my teens! Thank you for sharing a funny!
