Why do I spend all those nights and evenings learning how to teach the trivium to my children? Why is a foundation of logic central to what I think all citizens need to have at their fingertips?
Logic and a strong moralistic core are the tools that will carry you through life as a good person. Without logic, you can easily be persuaded by divisive people to agree with them or to make immoral decisions. More and more our society is becoming a land of muddleheaded sheep, more interested in their own gratification than in living a moral life.
A couple of nights ago I listened to Teaching the Trivium Part One – an audio recording of a workshop given by by Harvey and Laurie Bluedorn. This husband and wife team have a wonderful ability to articulate the necessity for an education that includes logic.
Their cogent, sound arguments for why classical methods of learning are valuable for our children far surpass my abilities to explain.
So give them a listen and decide what sort of citizens you want your children to be.
