Y is for YOU

Today I wanted to write about YOU. By YOU I don’t mean only you, I mean you and me – all of us moms. We are all YOU.

So here is the question I have for YOU: Do you ever wonder if you could let your boy become a warrior? This is a question that looms larger and larger each year as my children grow older. My son has always been a leader, from the very first. He had amazing warriors to mentor and shape his early years. His grandpa was a decorated hero and a warrior, on and off the battlefield. And his father helped to finish the job.

If you know that your child is something different, that he could be destined to find fulfillment doing something ever so important and yet something with only one outcome, what would you do? Would you understand?

Don’t get me wrong. I know full well that evil exists here in this world. No matter what anyone may say, there will always be evil at the gates wanting to gain entry. We will always need men to help keep us safe. But my boy? Or your’s?

I realize that not everyone who is in battle dies, I do think that the ultimate sacrifice is actually the burden of carrying the abject incivility of war with you for the rest of your life in civil society. That is what I fear.

I do not know what my son will do when he is older. I do know that he already is a mature youth who will stand for the weak and fight against the evil. I just do not know the path he will follow to get there.

I would not try to change the path laid out for him, but still that day is looming closer and closer each morning. And so if you have a child like mine, what will YOU do?

Zac Brown and his band say it so well. . .

  1. I think if any of my children wanted to enter a field where they were helping to protect others or safeguard freedoms, I would be proud and scared.
