ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND HIS TIMES
Xenophon was born in 431 BC and was one of many students of Socrates. He was then exiled from Athens and went to live among the Spartans where he was given land. A fierce warrior and brilliant tactician, his heroism is known today, nearly 2500 years later.
The best part of this story is that Xenophon in fact wrote stories, many of them true. One in particular, Anabasis, is an amazing tale of the march he made in 400 BC to come to the aid of Cyrus of Persia. In fact this book was used by Alexander the Great as a field guide to help him navigate the Persian region. The most amazing part about reading authors like Xenophon is how exciting and relevant these stories are even today.
If you are like me and used a classical and literature-based education philosophy to educate your children, you undoubtedly taught them of the exploits and heroism of Xenophon. Most everyone uses secondary sources and historical fiction to teach children about this time period in Greek history.
Have you ever thought of breaking out a translation of Xenophon’s own account of his exploits? I spent many years using compilations of history written by modern authors to teach my kids until I realized that the best way to understand someone is to read the words they wrote.
Xenophon is no exception. These words of his come down through the ages and open a world for you and your children to understand both the events and the man. And they are available free on Project Gutenberg and a good, reliable description of his life can be found on Infogalactic.
