I happened on a great set of videos by top scientists about their favorite scientist (yes it’s a tiny bit geeky, but very educational, gentle, and G-rated as far as I could tell) produced by Nottingham Trent University. The web site is www.favscientist.com and they also have a youtube channel (FavScientist).
This particular interview is about William “Bill” Jarrett was a Professor of Veterinary Medicine who was responsible for creating a vaccine for lungworm (a cattle parasite), identifying the source of feline leukemia, and figuring out that a papilloma virus was responsible for cancer of the stomach in Scottish Highland cattle but only if they ate a particular kind of feed… “An Excellent Bloke”
It is always interesting to see the heroes of scientists. It gives kids (and adults) a brief look into the minds of researchers in a given field of science, which can be a great enrichment to supplement a general study of science. The interviewees are not speaking down to the camera so there will likely be lexicons of vocabulary learning if you feel like taking it the extra step with your kids. Either way, the interviews are gentle and obvious that the scientists choosing their favorite scientist are really describing their own personal heroes. Very touching, actually.
