Johnny Gruelle – Where He Fits In History

Johnny GruelleJohnny Gruelle was born in December 1880, the year we began building the Panama canal. It was a year of severe snowstorms and gales across the country, injuring many people. It was also a year of beginnings with the first pay telephone in the US, the first performance of the song “Oh, Canada”, and the start of the Salvation Army in Britain. It was the days of John Philips Sousa and President Garfield, and troubles in the Congo and South Africa.

Raggedy Ann and her brother

My kids absolutely loves the Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy stories. We had the chapter book style stories, from when I was a child, and also the newer picture book versions of such classics as Raggedy Ann and Andy and the Camel with the Wrinkled Knees.

I read these books and stories again and again and again to my kids. The most fantastic thing about Johnny Gruelle’s stories is that they are filled with imagination and fun and adventure, but grounded in strong morals.

Here is a brief list of books you probably recognize, and maybe some new ones that will become treasured favorites in your home.
