Geography for Kids Who Love Music

Geography for kids who love music?

I can hear you asking that question and wondering if it could be a typo.

No. It is real, and it is wonderful!

My daughter discovered a website the other day called Radiooooo (that is five ‘o’s there).

This is a open source project to collect and share music from all around the world, by decade. You can either just listen to the great music and explore the countries as you go, or you can interact, create playlists, and even add music!

Any given decade, as you might imagine, might have lots and lots of music in a given country so you can oftentimes listen to a whole playlist of, say, 1980’s music from the USA, or 1920’s music from France.

It is a delightful way to let your child explore and if you have kids like my daughter, who struggled with Geography for years but loves music more than anything, this is a fantastic way to let a child discover the world. Literally.

For instance did you know that 1980’s music by Dragon from New Zealand sounds remarkably like the Talking Heads of the US in the same time period?

And wow was the music from today in England really interesting (Arthur Russell’s This is How We Walk On The Moon) with a combination of Scottish snaps on a viola or a cello combined with rock music.

This would be a wonderful site to let your child explore on a summer afternoon or a rainy morning in fall. You probably want to monitor what your children find, though. Some of the modern music includes rap, which might include language you don’t want to expose your kids to. But there is so much great music here, it is completely worth the extra care.

I think like. . . all of them. What do you think, which is your favorite?
