Count on Me

Count on Me - A DoodleMom review

Count on Me is a lovely and gentle walk through the day of a young girl who sees shapes and math everywhere she goes.

Each page is filled with delicate illustrations that offer so many opportunities for you and your child to talk about math together and explore.

You can ask your child to hunt for triangles, or spirals, or even fractals. Don’t worry though, you don’t need to study up before opening the pages. At the end of the story is a section that teaches you and your child all the basic shapes and ideas that the little girl in the story loves most. Let her guide you and your child through the meaning of a fractal and where you can find them in nature. Explore concentric circles and then challenge your child to go find an example in the house, or in your backyard.

There are so many, many opportunities to take the ideas presented in this elegant picture book and get out with your child for some hands-on math learning!

DESCRIPTION FROM THE PUBLISHER

A young girl sees the world differently in this beautiful picture book celebration of math.

Everyone has a passion. For some, it’s music. For others, it’s art. For our heroine, it’s math. When she looks around the world, she sees math in all the beautiful things: the concentric circles a stone makes in a lake, the curve of a slide, the geometric shapes in the playground. Others don’t understand her passion, but she doesn’t mind. There are infinite ways to see the world. And through math is one of them.

This book is a gorgeous ode to something vital but rarely celebrated. In the eyes of this little girl, math takes its place alongside painting, drawing and song as a way to ponder the beauty of the world.

Born in Extremadura, Spain. He approached his childhood reading and became devourer of images, stories and books of Salgari and Mafalda. In 1999 he left Seville to attend the School of Visual Art in New York (USA), the summer school of Zavrel Stepan in Sarmede (Italy) and classes with Octavia Monaco in Bologna (Italy).

His style is characterized by the expressiveness of his characters, clean compositions and intense chromatism. The essence of his work is “childhood, in a state so pure and wonderful that it is hard to understand when adults. We try to apply the adult mental schemes but they have their own”. The phase he enjoys the most about his work is when he has completed the storyboard, the color proofs, has done some illustrations and the rest is clear. This is a wonderful moment because it gives him confidence to be freer when illustrating. His inspiration comes from a mix of the infants’ world with the adult one and from the paradoxes existing between them. With his images he aims at conveying feelings, they are different in each book and he believes it is important that this is clear in order not to confuse the reader. He works as an illustrator in Milan. Teaches Illustration in Spain and Italy, organizes workshops with children and adolescents, does posters, companies’ advertisment, and sell some of his paintings. “
