H is for Higher

H is for HigherHigher. Isn’t that what we strive for every day with our children?

We want them to climb higher, reach further, and expand their understanding of the world and our place in it. But even more, we want our children to look up. To seek the goodness and light placed in the world and in us.

And it is our responsibility to get our children, to cajole them, and urge them to reach higher.

To learn to read and write and understand math and to dream of touching the stars.

Beyond that we want our children to discover beauty in your backyard.

We want them to place the light in their hearts, in a spot safe from the ugliness and hate in the world that will threaten to pull them down. That hate and evil is all around us. We know it deep in our bones.

Our mother-instincts are tuned in to detect the presence of that evil.

The funny feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when you see someone watching your child with just a little too much interest. That little voice in your head that says, “No, go back and check that he is safe.” The moment He reaches down and taps you gently on the shoulder to direct your attention toward your son as he dives into the deep-end as a toddler. Our mother-instincts are our divine anchor. They are our special reverse 911 directory service. He will call us, if only we pay attention. He will tell us what we need to do to keep our children safe. All we have to do is listen. That is our way of reaching higher and our way of showing our children the path.

As we reach higher each day, we show our children the light.

With Him in their hearts, we know our children will be OK. We know that they might not always remember to look to the light above, sometimes they may stray or their eye might wander. But in the end our children will reach higher and He will be there to grab them by the hand and guide their souls safely.

So for me, and I suspect for you too, homeschooling is precious gift we are given so that we have the time to help our children reach higher, with Him firmly pocketed in their hearts.

How do you help your child to reach higher?

  1. Support, encouragement, modeling, and smiles– all ways I hope to help my boys reach higher. I think to move beyond ourselves and our current skill set we need to keep trying to push beyond our boundaries, pick ourselves up when we fall, and learn to ask others for help when needed.

    1. I absolutely love that! Especially the modeling part – that is what I can forget about sometimes. Thank You!

  2. Makes me think of the CS Lewis quote about “higher up and higher in” or something similar. What a great goal for your children – higher. If we aren’t intentional about these things, they get left behind. You are doing well at that, it seems, and encouraging me along the way. Thank you.

    1. Oh, I have to go look that one up! And I am not so sure how good I am at helping my kids to that goal, but I do try. 🙂
