Finding Fellowship

Finding fellowship – Support Groups, Co-ops, & Park Days, Oh My!

Finding FellowshipAre you the kind of mom who needs fellowship?

For years I was that mom who said, “No. I can make my own way, Thank You. No fellowship for me.”

Looking back I am pretty sure I was in denial. Denial and lonely.

I tried to find fellowship, but it took a while to find my way.

The moms I knew who did not homeschool really did not understand what my life was like. My family was not really supportive overall, so I did not find fellowship there.

After a few years of homeschooling I realized I really needed to find some homeschooling moms to talk with.

Luckily my kids had similar desires and so we joined a pile of park day groups and found our own support groups at homeschool day events at local sports and activity stores. I developed my own personal posse of fellowship moms and depending on the day of the week, I had topics and approaches to discuss. At some of the activities, the moms I befriended were veteran homeschool moms and I could ask anything. At other activities, the homeschooling moms were most interested in discussing learning types and different schooling methods. And then there was a group of moms I met up with at a park once a month while our kids did live action role playing who really just wanted the company. And so with these moms I discussed nothing. We just sat in our homeschool mom chairs and knitted and updated our lesson plans and read. But we did it together. And that was great too.

I think the most important thing to realize is that no matter who you are, every homeschooling mom will need to find some kind of fellowship, even if it is a friend on the Internet.

But if park days are just not for you, or (like me) you couldn’t find any Co-Ops that your kids were willing to join, don’t worry! You are unique, homeschool mom. What works for you and your family is not what works for Sally the supermom who homeschools and posts all day on Facebook. I know that with a little time, you will discover that you are finding fellowship.

I think the biggest lesson of homeschooling is realizing that everyone in life needs to find their own way.

That unique way is perfect for them, but probably not for you. And that is just fine. We were made unique, so why should we all find the same kind of fellowship? Right?!

Now, if you homeschool your kids already, what kind of fellowship have you found to support you in this perfect way of life?
