The Cat and The Green Army Men – A Homeschooling Parable
We had a birthday recently in our house, which is always a cause for decorations and chocolate cake. This time I decorated the table with little plastic green army men and plastic chickens, for reasons that could only make sense if you knew my kids.
Strangely, my kids never got to play with the green army men. Our little orange cat decided that in fact those green army men were for him. God only knows what goes through the mind of our cat and why molded green plastic toys are on his list of “must have” toys. But for the last week, every time we sit down for dinner, that cat shows up to lay on the table upside down and toss about his green army men.
You Can Never Tell What Your Child Will Want To Learn When You Homeschool
Homeschooling children is a lot like discovering your cat loves wargaming with kids toys. You will never, ever be able to predict what your children find fascinating. If you raise your kids to be independent and curious, they will find a way to surprise you. One day your son will wake up and say, “Mom I want to learn plumbing, Java programming, and to play the cello.”
And all you will be able to do is remember the orange cat and the green army men and say, “Great! Let me help you get started!”
That is why I joined SchoolhouseTeachers.com.
With over 300 classes, free planners, the AppleCore transcript service, access to all of the World Book encylopedia content, more educational videos than you can count, and great holiday and seasonal crafts and printables for the entire family, how can you go wrong?
Your children can explore and learn and become the person that they want to be, without limitation. And you pay just one price, join a community of more than 7,000 homeschooling families, and don’t have to purchase any textbooks!
